Abstract
De Sectie Militaire Geschiedenis (SMG) is het kennis-, onderzoeks- en voorlichtingscentrum op militair-historisch gebied voor zover dat de Nederlandse landstrijdkrachten betreft. De aandacht richt zich op de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse landmacht vanaf 1568, het eerste jaar van de gewapende Nederlandse opstand tegen de Spaanse overheersing. De geschiedenis van het instituut bestrijkt meer dan honderd jaar. In 1891 werd de basis gelegd voor de officiële militaire geschiedschrijving binnen de Koninklijke Landmacht. Dit artikel is vooral gewijd aan de fotocollectie van het archief. Hoe kwam het tot stand en hoe functioneert het vandaag de dag.

Keeping Dutch military history in the picture? The photo collection of the Military History Section or SMG
The Military History Section is the expertise, research and information centre for the military history of the Dutch land forces. The collection covers the history of the Dutch forces from 1568, the first year of the Dutch armed revolt against Spanish rule. The institute itself was founded more than a hundred years ago. In 1891, the foundation was laid for official military history writing within the Koninklijke Landmacht or Royal Land Forces.
