Echt en oprecht. Geluidsversterking, radio en politieke retoriek, 1900-1945

In 1936 sprak de Nederlandse premier Colijn de legendarische woorden 'Ik verzoek den luisteraars (...) rustig te gaan slapen (...). Er is voorshands nog geen enkele reden om werkelijk ongerust te zijn.' De frase is later vooral gebruikt als illustratie van de naïeve wereldvreemdheid van de Nederlandse regering. De contemporaine critici waren echter unaniem lovend. Dat roept de vraag op waarom Colijn niet wordt gezien als een van de politici die een modern en effectief gebruik van radio maakte. Steevast worden wel Roosevelt, Churchill en Hitler genoemd. Huub Wijfjes onderzoekt waarom zij wel en waarom Colijn niet.

In 1936, the Dutch Prime Minister Colijn spoke the legendary words: "I appeal to the listeners (...) to sleep soundly (...). For the time being, there is no reason to be truly worried." His words were later primarily used as to illustrate the naive outlook of the Dutch government. Contemporary critics were however unanimous in their praise. This begs the question why Colijn is not seen as one of the politicians who made modern and effective use of radio. Roosevelt, Churchill and Hitler are always mentioned.
