De laatste en grootste, James Camerons TITANIC uit1997, staat centraal in dit artikel, waarin de auteur onderzoekt hoe deze film binnen de traditie van herinnering aan de
ramp past. Door te kijken naar de wijze waarop de ramp wordt herinnerd en naar de overeenkomsten en verschillen tussen TITANIC (1997) en eerdere representaties van de ramp, wordt de complexe relatie tussen film, mythe en herinnering belicht.

The memory of a myth and the myth of the memory. The film versions of the Titanic disaster

Over the years, the mythical sinking of the Titanic in 1912 has exercised an enormous attraction on film makers. The memory of the disaster is kept alive in a total of seven major motion pictures. The latest and biggest, James Cameron's 1997 TITANIC, is central in this article in which the author examines how this film fits into the tradition of the memory of the catastrophe. Studying the manner in which the disaster is remembered and the similarities and differences between TITANIC (1997) and earlier representations of the Titanic's demise sheds light on the complex relationship between film, myth and memory.
