Abstract

This article shows how the complex relationship between colonial heritage and postcolonial impact is reflected in the notion of Francophone literature and the classification as a Francophone author, with focus on the work of the Algerian novelist, essayist and filmmaker Assia Djebar. The particular situation and significance of the language of writing, French, is studied in the postcolonial context of the Algerian literature’s diasporization, a notion proposed by Hafid Gafaïti (2005). Even if Assia Djebar writes in only one language, French, which she calls herself her Franco-graphie, her writing is influenced by voices in dialectal Arabic and Berber. From her position as a migrant between languages, spaces and memories the Algerian women’s collective and individual destiny is evoked. Based on Alfonso de Toro’s (1999) concept of Franco-phonie, according to which the French language is the most inaccessible common denominator of the so-called Francophone literatures, it is shown that the Djebarian writing in French becomes an interstitial place of cultural hybridization, which deconstructs the dichotomies between the French and the Algerian culture.
