Marianne Alopaeus, Anne-Marie Berglund et la France: Déterritorialisation, Dialogues Culturels, Reterritorialisation
Abstract
Two Swedish-speaking writers with ties to Finland are at the centre of this study: Marianne Alopaeus (1918–2014) and Anne-Marie Berglund (1952–2020). Alopaeus was born in Finland and grew up in Helsinki. From 1974 until just before her death, she lived in Sweden. Anne-Marie Berglund was born to Finnish parents in Helsinki but grew up in Sweden. Both Alopaeus and Berglund show in their works a fascination for France and for French culture. France is a country that appears as a place of existential exile in their works. I analyze the novel Mörkrets kärna (1975) and the essay Drabbad av Sverige (1983) by Alopaeus as well as Berglund’s epistolary novel Breven till mamma (2005), on the one hand to analyze study the relationship with French culture and literature in these texts and, on the other hand, to examine the links between exile, nomadism and literary creation, which is a central theme. I examine the movement from Scandinavia (Finland/Sweden) to France and then back to Scandinavia in order to elucidate the arrival of the protagonists at a post-exile condition (Harel 2005). In this process, the literary text plays the role of a space both of cultural transformation and reterritorialization.
