Abstract
A text recently published in a French newspaper and signed by more than a hundred writers and intellectuals brings to light some of the tensions within critical debates on “francophonie”. The status the article confers on the French language appears to be incompatible with any consideration of diglossia, be it social or literary. Moreover, this collective defence of the French language mobilises opposing beliefs in a problematic manner, thus prompting us to reconsider the very notion of “francophonie”.
Une tribune collective parue dans la presse française en janvier 2019 met au jour les tensions internes à la « francophonie critique ». Le statut conféré à la langue française s’y révèle incompatible avec la prise en compte de toute diglossie, sociale ou littéraire. Plus encore, la défense du français y mobilise des convictions opposées, relançant d’autant la question de la « francophonie » et de son étude.
