Abstract

The polycrystalline diamond layer (PCD) seems to be an appropriate protection reducing chemical activity of zirconium alloys. Its application could substantially enhance zirconium resistance against high-temperature corrosion and hydrogen absorption. This paper studies samples of zirconium alloys Zry-2 covered with a thin 300-nm PCD layer and exposed to steam at temperatures of 950 and 1150 °C. Transmission parameters and PCD layer morphology are studied using ex-situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results imply that the corrosion rate of the Zry-2 zirconium alloy is lower under high temperature.
