Abstract

The paper focuses on characteristic properties of plaster samples from the historical Želiv monastery. The research aimed at obtaining information on original raw materials and determining types of damage present on the facade of the building examined. Thermal analysis and infrared spectrometry were the key methods used to identify binder types and, in some cases, help determine the type of damage (salinity). Four samples of plaster binders were examined. In future, these analyses of historical plaster could help in the search for a compatible material and its application. Primary components of the plaster samples were determined both in terms of quality and quantity along with key causes of their degradation. A comprehensive evaluation of plaster composition and degradation requires making use of a broad spectrum of analytical methods.
