The impact of genetics on cardiovascular health has never been more profound. Over the past several decades, discoveries in cardiovascular genetics have transformed our understanding of disease pathogenesis, refined risk assessment, and paved the way for novel therapies that are improving outcomes for patients worldwide. From familial hypercholesterolemia and inherited cardiomyopathies to polygenic risk scores and precision medicine, genetics is increasingly shaping how we prevent, diagnose, and treat cardiovascular disease.
In this issue of the Methodist DeBakey Cardiovascular Journal, we present nine reviews from internationally recognized experts examining the genetic foundations of heart and vascular disorders. These articles explore the evolving science behind inherited conditions and the growing role of genetic testing, risk stratification, and targeted therapies in clinical practice.
This edition is especially important because it highlights the remarkable progress being made toward precision medicine. A deeper understanding of genetic risk enables clinicians to identify disease earlier, tailor interventions more effectively, and ultimately improve outcomes for patients and families.
I extend my sincere gratitude to guest editor Robert Roberts, MD, whose longstanding contributions to cardiovascular genetics helped shape this informative collection. I also thank the many distinguished authors whose thoughtful reviews provide a timely overview of a rapidly evolving field that continues to redefine cardiovascular medicine.
As always, I encourage our readers to explore the breadth of content available in the Journal archives, especially the learning resources in our Special Collections of videos, case reports, and interactive CME cases. We also invite you to submit your own case reports! If you haven’t already explored these options on our website or subscribed to receive our free e-newsletter, be sure to do that now.
