Jean Bismuth, M.D.

The editors of the Methodist DeBakey Cardiovascular Journal extend their sincerest gratitude to Jean Bismuth, M.D., for his guidance on this special issue on venous interventions. Dr. Bismuth earned his medical degree from Copenhagen University in Copenhagen, Denmark. He completed his surgical residency at The Brooklyn Hospital Center in New York, New York, followed by his vascular fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.

Dr. Bismuth joined the Houston Methodist Hospital faculty in 2008 and now serves as the associate program director of the Houston Methodist Vascular Surgery Training Program. He is an associate professor of cardiovascular surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College and adjunct professor in Rice University's Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering.

Dr. Bismuth's clinical interests cover a wide spectrum of vascular pathologies, including aortic, carotid, mesenteric, venous, and lower extremity occlusive disease. A prolific researcher, Dr. Bismuth receives support from the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, and Society for Vascular Surgery, as well as a number of industry grants. This funding has allowed him to explore his interests in venous thrombosis, aortic dissections, the influence of peripheral vascular disease on lower extremity muscle perfusion, endovascular robotics, surgical education, and cardiovascular imaging with an emphasis on magnetic resonance imaging. Previously, Dr. Bismuth worked in preventative medical interventions in vascular surgery as well as plaque morphology and lipids in atherosclerosis. Dr. Bismuth is the national principal investigator for two major clinical trials.
