Digital Decimal Coding System of the geomorphological regions of Poland – a proposal
Abstract
In recent years, interest in an overview geomorphological map of Poland has increased. Its most recent edition was published more than forty years ago. At several research centres across the country, intensive work is currently underway on the Digital Geomorphological Map of Poland at a scale of 1:500,000. These efforts have also stimulated renewed interest in the geomorphological regionalisation of Poland with precision at the level of mesoregions. The last version of Poland’s geomorphological regionalisation was published in 1986. The new version of the Digital Geomorphological Map of Poland at a scale of 1:500,000 will serve as the basis for developing an updated geomorphological regionalisation of Poland at an overview scale. In the future, all delimited geomorphological mesoregions will be described in a comprehensive monograph. To facilitate the identification and description of all geomorphological regions, a new system of designation is needed. The aim of this article is to propose a new Digital Decimal Coding System (DDCS) for both previously recognized and newly identified geomorphological regions in Poland. The proposed DDCS will facilitate the systematisation of these regions and ensure a more orderly arrangement. The proposed coding can serve as a universal method for designating regions not only in Poland but also across Europe.
