Abstract

Background: People living with neuroscience-related conditions, and their families, can experience isolation, reduced wellbeing, with limited opportunities for peer support, outside clinical environments. Consequently, the Neurocafe Tonbridge was created to offer a welcoming, community-based space where people can come together to connect, share experiences, and learn practical ways to support their own wellbeing.

Approach: Neurocafe Tonbridge is a free, monthly drop-in session held in a local community venue in Tonbridge, Kent (UK). It provides an informal, non-clinical environment for anyone affected by neurological or psychiatric conditions, along with carers, friends, and family members.

The approach is grounded in person-centred and trauma-informed lifestyle neuroscience, with an emphasis on supporting whole-person wellbeing — mental, physical, emotional, and social.

Key features include: Peer-support and lived-experience sharing

Creative and sensory activities such as rhythm, music, and movement

Education on practical lifestyle strategies which participants can apply day-to-day

Co-design: attendees shape future sessions through suggestions, shared interests, and personal stories

Community partnerships, including local organisations and guest contributors

Catering and wellbeing support is provided via related community support service that creates low-carbohydrate, low-sugar baked goods, to enable attendees to enjoy sociable refreshments that align with brain/mind-supportive nutritional approaches.

This catering partnership helps:

Create a warm, welcoming café atmosphere

Ensure refreshments support metabolic and neurological wellbeing

Model how nutrition change can be achievable and enjoyable

Results: Since launching in 2023, Neurocafe Tonbridge has:

Established a growing, regular community of people directly affected by brain/mind conditions and their supporters

Fostered meaningful peer relationships, reducing social isolation

Enabled participants to share their own coping strategies, creativity, strengths, and identities beyond diagnosis

Demonstrated how non-clinical, community-anchored spaces can complement health services and improve wellbeing

Strengthened local collaboration between community groups, food businesses, and person-centred care advocates

Although formal quantitative evaluation is ongoing, qualitative feedback emphasises:

Feeling understood and less alone

Increased confidence in using lifestyle strategies

Restored sense of identity, purpose, and joy

Appreciation for a calm, friendly, non-clinical environment

Implications: for International Delegates

Low-cost community models can expand wellbeing support for people with neurological and psychiatric conditions, especially where clinical services are overstretched.

Peer-led and co-designed activity helps individuals re-establish agency, social connection, and meaning.

Nutrition support partnerships, such as our online ketobakery model, demonstrate how small local enterprises can play an active role in public health and lived-experience-led wellbeing.

This model is highly transferable: it requires only a welcoming venue, community facilitation, and willingness to centre lived experience.

When adapting internationally, consider local food culture, dietary norms, community spaces, and collaboration with local healthcare/advocacy networks.
