How has marianismo as an ideology dictated norms for Mexican women within the political arena?
Abstract
The ideology and practical application of Marianismo has been embedded in Mexican culture since the late 1500’s, yet its effects are still present today. Marianismo is an ideal image that emphasizes the role of a woman within society, embodying family values, reason, nurturing traits, and respect for others. This ideal image serves as a reference point that dictates the norms and behaviors of Mexican women: it also creates harmful effects for women in how they are treated and perceived in their society. This project will examine the influence of Marianismo from the late 20th century in the Mexican political arena, including how it informs and shapes the actions of female Mexican politicians as well as how they are portrayed in the media and popular culture and regarded in society. This continues to be a timely and important question; 2024 is an election year in Mexico, and the two leading candidates are women.
