Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this proposed research is to investigate how artificial intelligence (AI) influences higher education, a topic of increasing interest in academia. While AI's adoption elicits both excitement and concern, its impact on education remains a matter of debate. This study addresses research gaps identified in the literature by examining and comparing the perspectives of students and educators regarding AI in education.
Methodology: Utilizing a survey methodology, this study will gather insights from college students and educators at one university in the Southeastern U.S. The sample will consist of college students randomly selected from the busiest areas, such as the Coffee Bar and Student Center, and educators randomly selected from different departments, using the university’s directory page. Participants will be presented with an online survey asking questions about aspects of their demographic background, what AI-powered tools they have used, their attitudes toward AI experience, and most importantly, their intentions of AI usage for learning and teaching in the future. Statistical analyses such as descriptive statistics, data visualization, and linear regression will be used through the statistics software.
Results: We will provide empirical evidence on participants’ attitudes and behavioral intentions toward AI applications in academia. Furthermore, we will compare results from aspects such as individual experiences and specific contexts.
Contribution: This research will contribute to providing valuable insights into the applications of AI in higher education from diverse viewpoints. The findings of the research will help higher education institutions develop more inclusive and effective approaches to integrating AI into learning and teaching.
