Abstract

The rate at which sexual offenders are being reincarcerated is astonishingly high. The research reveals many long-term risk factors associated with recidivism rates, which highlight the urgent need to employ preventative strategies. Examined here are hypersexual disorder, cognitive distortions, and personality disorders; as well as dysfunctional upbringings, failure to register, and substance abuse. Additional factors associated with recidivism typically include previous convictions and offense type, therefore, this study offers a comprehensive approach to mitigating recidivism through a combination of therapeutic means, community supervision, correctional college education, psychological treatment aimed at emotional and cognitive regulation. Education in an individualized setting, along with supervision proves to be beneficial in mitigating recidivism among sexual offenders because it addresses their diverse criminogenic needs. Drawing from literature that investigates both dynamic and static risk factors, this paper strives to recognize potential offenders and identify their specific needs.
