Abstract

This research project develops an offline mobile application for Japanese language learning tailored specifically to the University of North Georgia's Japanese 1001-2002 curriculum. Many existing language learning platforms such as Quizlet and Duolingo require constant internet connectivity, features being behind a paywall via premium subscriptions, and provide generic content that does not align with institution-specific course materials, creating challenges for students who need targeted study tools. This project addresses these limitations by creating an iOS application pre-loaded with vocabulary sets, kanji practice, and grammar that directly correspond to UNG's Japanese course sequence. The implementation approach utilizes Swift and SwiftUI frameworks to create an intuitive, offline-capable study platform that incorporates spaced repetition algorithms, interactive flashcards, practice quizzes, and progress tracking features. The application stores all content locally on the device, enabling students to study effectively without internet access while ensuring their practice directly supports classroom learning objectives. This project examines Mobile Application Language Learning (MALL) research to inform pedagogical design decisions and evaluates the effectiveness of curriculum-aligned study tools compared to generic language learning platforms.
