Abstract

In 2012, the United Nations established the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a set of 17 interlinked global objectives intended as a “shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future”. While Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) increasingly commit to these goals, a significant “gap” often exists between high-level institutional mandates, such as AACSB accreditation requirements, and practical, hands-on student experiences. This study proposes that the Enactus methodology serves as a pre-built, high-impact conceptual model for closing this gap through interdisciplinary project leadership.

We examine how the Enactus student organization empowers students to identify community needs, develop sustainable business models, and create social impact, and how these activities align with three major SDGs, SDG 4 (Quality Education), 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions). Beyond institutional alignment, this study explores the social science of project-based learning through implementing the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle, advancing leadership competencies among undergraduate students.

This process requires students to move beyond theoretical understanding by assessing community needs, developing viable, scalable business models to address complex social problems, and facilitating leadership development through proficient problem-solving and critical thinking.

This model demonstrates that Enactus is not merely a student organization but a systemic solution that fulfills institutional accreditation mandates while providing students with the rigorous, real-world research and innovation experience required for the modern workforce. By embedding these co-curricular programs within the university ecosystem, this study provides practical insights for how HEIs can integrate the SDGs across four critical pillars: curriculum, research and innovation, community engagement, and organizational operations.
