Refugees in Europe: A Constructivist Perspective
Abstract
This research uses qualitative analysis to explain the changing attitudes and policies regarding the entrance and settlement of refugees in Europe. The paper begins with a breakdown of Constructivism in International Relations, including major assumptions and principles. It continues with a description of the “refugee crisis”, focusing on this issue’s relevance. The next section emphasizes the different definitions given to the term “refugee” and their contribution to the policy responses of the refugee influxes, including key events, such as the breakdown of the Dublin system and the rise of several far-right groups. Two significant factors lawmakers consider when drafting new policies are political trust and public opinion. These factors allow for assumptions on how the future will look. Ultimately, this paper concludes that interactions among groups change opinions and, therefore, policies about refugees.
