Abstract
When it comes to films and gender roles, we can think of the recent film Barbie (2023) and this offers both the trappings of feminine we normally associate with the roles pushed onto women but also offers a critique of the same. This primarily lays in juxtaposition to a film that offers a similar both show and satire of the masculine in American Psycho (2000). I want to show how both films can be focused on a idealized icon of our societies expectations of a man or women and in turn offer a critique of them in their function in our reality. I’ll analyze how from other works how the conflicting ideas of what one should be based on their gender both shape a person’s ideas of what these roles are and how to break away from them. This will also be told in part by the social forces that can keep the roles in place and one in that role despite resistance to it
Both films and their associated main characters offer criticism of roles they play but in doing so have also pointed out how in our real world that criticism can be missed, and the characters held as a icon. This is done regardless of their intended message and can seen with other figures of femininity and masculinity as they are upheld for the gender aspects they critique or oppose; This is as we see the trappings of gender about them and seem to take it first into account for conformation as a society.
