The Ins Become the Outs: Investigating the Gender Gap in Supporting the MAGA Movement

The Make America Great Again movement is the dominant force in the Republican party. One outcome of this shift in power is a rising gender gap. The purpose of this analysis is to address factors that explain the gap between men and women in their likelihood to support MAGA. This paper hypothesizes policy is not the sole factor in explaining the gender gap. Rather, broader shifts in society, and the socialization process, must be examined. This paper presents data and analysis of three factors it asserts contribute to the gap: a changing economy, evolving gender norms, and the characteristics of the MAGA movement. It finds men and women are facing different challenges in the workforce and that evolving gender norms are treated differently by men and women. It concludes that the characteristics of the MAGA movement are less appealing to women than men.
