Federal Troop Deployment in American Cities: Evaluating the Policy Arguments

In June of 2025, President Donald Trump ordered federal troops into the city of Los Angeles, California, citing a host of reasons including, among others, violent crime, the protection of federal property, and protests over immigration raids by agents of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This has set off a firestorm of controversy that is ongoing as we write this piece. The Trump administration soon sent troops to other US cities and threatened to send them to even more. These actions raise many serious and interesting questions that strike right at the heart of the American system of government; a system that has historically been based upon a separation of powers, checks and balances among the federal institutions of congress, the chief executive, and the Courts, in addition to heavily blurring the lines between the powers of the individual states versus the federal government regarding establishing law and order and keeping the peace. We attempt to debate the pros and cons of this ongoing policy and conclude with some thoughts on the significance of this dramatic shift in how the United States deals with public safety in an ordered republic.
