
A Review of Virtual Reality Application in Airline Pilot Training
Abstract
Virtual reality technology has been in a development trend since 1966 when it was used as a flight simulator. Despite some unsuccessful samples, it emerged and being in the training area, and has been used in the public sector for 25 years. The aim of the study covers the analysis of three main flight stages. Firstly, take-off stage includes external and internal controls, engine start, taxi and take-off tasks. Secondly, controlling air movements in traffic pattern stage includes climb, ascending, and cruise flight, low and normal bank turns, turns in climb and descent, speed altitude tracking tasks. Thirdly, approach and landing stage includes triangulation tracking, approach pattern, landing, leaving the runway and taxiing tasks. According to the examination of pilotage students, a statistical difference was found between VR and real flight performances in Speed Altitude Tracking, and Approach Pattern tasks.
