Isolation and Injuries Pilot Study: College Soccer Players Rehabilitating Significant Injuries Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic
By: David Hoyt and Lisa Monetti
Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic greatly impacted almost every facet of student life beginning in March 2020. The literature suggests that the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the physical therapy industry and college student athletes, suggesting that college athletes rehabilitating from significant injuries may have been affected as well. This paper will present the analysis and conclusions of three interviews with college soccer players about their rehab experiences and overall recovery outcomes. All three individuals were injured prior to the pandemic. The results of the interviews suggest that the pandemic reduced hope, sense of control, and social support but did not affect the physical therapy that was administered. The recovery outcome was found to be relatively unaffected, but the rehab experiences of college soccer players were negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
