Pride, but is there Respect at Work? Survey Based Evidence from Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Workers in the United States
Abstract
This study used data from the 2018 U.S. General Social Survey (GSS) data to examine workplace respect for LGB workers in the United States and the factors that influence disparities when they experience lower levels of workplace respect relative to heterosexual workers. Results show that differences in demographic characteristics such as occupational prestige may play a role in how sexual minorities are perceived in the workplace. Interestingly, educational attainment was not a factor found to influence workplace respect in most models, though it was a significant factor in the full model, the same model in which occupational prestige was not significant. These findings may suggest that factors like family income may interact with variables like educational attainment and moderate the influence of occupational prestige, perhaps greater levels of income mediates the role of occupational prestige.
