Access to the Paradigm content and to the Librarian area

This guide explains how to set up and manage access to publications available on the sciendo.com content platform, both at the institutional and individual levels.

It is intended for librarians and library staff responsible for access management and usage reporting.

This guide covers:

  • setting up access to content on sciendo.com,
  • using the Librarian Area to manage holdings and reports.

The content follows common library processes and is designed to be practical and easy to apply in everyday work.

If you need help at any stage, our team is here to assist you.

Access types on Reference-global.com

Reference-global supports two access models: institutional (for libraries and universities) and individual for single users.
Both models can be used in parallel, depending on whether the content is browed from an institutional network or from a personal account.
This section explains how these two access types work and why both are necessary on our platform.

Two ways to access the content

On the Reference-global platform, we offer two types of authorisation:

  • institutional access, which gives us the ability to grant access to content for institutional users,
  • individual access, which allows users (including those authorised as institution members or who access the platform from within the institution’s network) to purchase individual books or articles and assign them to their personal accounts. We also use individual accounts to grant access to the Librarian area on the platform.

What’s the difference between institutional and individual access?

Each access method has a different role on the platform. Institutional access provides quick and seamless entry to content. However, it does not identify individual users. That means we cannot distinguish between a regular reader and a librarian. Individual access allows us to confirm who the user is. This is essential for actions that require identity verification, such as accessing librarian tools or making personal purchases. After verification, we assign the appropriate permissions to the user’s account.

Important
Reference-global, as subsidiary of De Gruyter Brill, shares its access management system with its parent company. This means that user accounts created on degruyterbrill.com also work on reference-global.com – the same login credentials (email address and password) are valid for both platforms.

Institutional access to the content

As we work closely with LibLynx, we provide institutional access via IP/EZProxy authentication.
These methods allow librarians seamless and secure access to content without requiring individual user credentials. This simplifies access management, enhances user experience and ensures that usage is properly attributed to the institution.
The platform should automatically recognize institutional users. However, if it does not, the following steps shall be applied. Please follow the steps below.
Login steps:

  1. Open https://reference-global.com
  2. Click the user icon in the upper right corner (1) and click the Login button (2).

  3. On the next screen, select “Access through your institution”.

  4. Type the name of your institution into the search box and select it when it appears in the list.

  5. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the login.

Librarian area

The Librarian Area is a dedicated section of the Reference-global content platform, designed for librarians who manage access and resources.
It provides tools to:

  • view your institution’s holdings,
  • generate metadata files (MARC, KBART),
  • review available collections,
  • download COUNTER usage reports.

Access to this section is not automatic and must be granted by the Reference-global team.

How to get access

To use the Librarian Area, an individual account is required.

  • If you already have an individual account at degruyterbrill.com, please share the email address with your Reference-global representative.

This tab shows all books, journals, and packages your institution has access to.

From this page, you may:

  • export journal data in KBART, CSV, or Excel formats (1),
  • export MARC records for books,
  • expand the list by clicking the down arrow option next to the selected content type (2),
  • preview the list of titles within the package by clicking its name (3).

The next screen provides additional functionalities:

  • browse the content of the package,
  • search within the package,
  • export MARC records for a specific title,
  • or go directly to the product page.

On this page, you can:

  • select the timeframe for the report (1),
  • apply filters to narrow results(2),
  • download the data in Excel format,
  • set up automatic data harvesting directly into your Library system via the SUSHI (Standardised Usage Statistics Harvesting Initiative, a method for automated data harvesting into library systems) protocol (4).

As Reference-global is fully COUNTER 5.1 compliant via LibLynx, the list of reports we are providing is as follows:

3. Update IPs tab

As we partner with the IP Registry, a service provided by PSI, we aim to make the process of checking, monitoring, and updating the IP addresses used to authenticate access to content as simple as possible for librarians. To support this, we provide a direct link to the PSI login page, allowing you to manage your IP information quickly and efficiently. This ensures that access to content is correctly authenticated and up to date.
