Abstract

Automotive industry is undergoing rapid transformation, where managing engineering changes efficiently is critical to maintaining competitiveness and ensuring product quality. This study addresses the challenges faced by engineering teams in managing product modifications within an automotive wiring harness company, particularly regarding training gaps, process complexity, and interdepartmental coordination.

To address these issues, a Computerized Decision Support System (CDSS) was developed specifically tailored to the wiring harness sector. The CDSS provides structured, step-by-step guidance for engineers, supports workflow standardization, and enhances traceability across departments. The system was developed using the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) methodology combined with Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) to better align with the company’s operational needs. Field implementation of the system on a pilot site demonstrated a  65% reduction in Premium Freight incidents and a significant decrease in daily interruptions of experienced engineers by new recruits (from 68% to 18%). It also led to a 63.37% reduction in premium freight costs, demonstrating tangible financial impact. The system further contributed to improved onboarding efficiency and greater adherence to engineering change procedures. This work represents a novel application of digital decision support in an industrial context, bridging the gap between theoretical models and operational needs in complex manufacturing environments.
