Although reflection on the interpretation of the human face may seem to have been exhausted in the 20th century, Max Picard renewed it in an unprecedented way through the originality of his vision and thought. The aim of this article is precisely to underscore the originality of a visionary meditation inspired by cultural pessimism and rejecting the traditional ways of conceptual analysis. Contempting physiognomy, Max Picard believes that the organic cohesion of the human face, initially guaranteed by divine likeness, is threatened with dissociation by the trends of modern life. This threat is further accentuated by a phenomenon of iconographic proliferation and by a war of images that could aggravate this process. But above all, Max Picard is an empathetic and passionate observer of the secret life of faces, which he knows perfectly well how to decipher and share with us.

When thinking philosophically about the face, inevitably Levinas comes to our minds. His ethics are based on the human face, that forbids us to kill. His book Totality an Infinity (1961) relies on Franz Rosenzweig’s Star of Redemption (1921), which is “too present to be quoted” (Levinas). In The Star of Redemption, the face appears in the very end, it forms the climax and keystone of the work, but less in ethical terms than in an epistemological perspective. Rosenzweig first seeks the relationship to truth, to knowledge and its conditions in the divine face, in order to then read it from the human face – both are inseparably linked, like theology and philosophy. This article aims to examine the relationship between Levinas’ and Rosenzweig’s face and the function it plays in their respective works.

The ‘silent play’, which had long been characterised by the use of masks, experienced a renaissance at the end of the 19th century, when the art of theatre was to be renewed through the revaluation of body language, with a new significance being attached to the expressive power of faces. The supposedly universal character of body language led to a codification of gestures and facial expressions, from which artists in the theory and practice of pantomime such as Max Reinhardt, Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Grete Wiesenthal wanted to break away. The latter two in particular regarded the language of the body as highly personal and authentic, and facial expressions as a mirror of the soul. However, other authors who experimented with literary pantomime, such as Arthur Schnitzler or Robert Walser, questioned this postulated authenticity: their reflexive pantomimes reveal the mask and illusion games in society and theatre.

Klaus Mann wrote Mephisto: Roman einer Karriere in 1936 and depicted the world of theater under a regime that constantly staged itself. Through a deal with the devil, the main character, Höfgen, sacrifices his ideals for a dazzling career. Mann describes faces and bodies with pedantic precision, thus outlining an anthropological typology: monsters appear in monstrous bodies and mere masks, while Höfgen deteriorates not only spiritually but also physically. In contrast, honest characters display imperfect but natural and pleasant bodies and facial expressions. Despite his condemnation of the regime, Mann adheres to the physiognomic beliefs of his time: physical and facial flaws display moral decay.

In the 1980s, modern urban developments and recently inaugurated reconstructions of historic centres in cities across the GDR were presented by the East German regime in a variety of media – films, exhibitions, popular science books – as tangible manifestations of the ‘developed socialist society’ (Entwickelte Sozialistische Gesellschaft). This article analyses the series of illustrated histories of GDR cities (Geschichte der Stadt in Wort und Bild), published between 1978 and 1988 by the publishing house VEB Deutscher Verlag der Wissenschaften, which traces the centuries-old struggle for emancipation of the German working class leading to the socialist regime through the prism of the urban, architectural and industrial heritage of the GDR. After describing the editorial project in its original political and ideological context, the study presents the results of an investigation into the actors involved in the media coverage of architecture and urban developments in the GDR under Erich Honecker, from party officials to historians, publishing professionals and image specialists involved in the project. Once discarded by history, these books prove to be valuable testimonies to a still little-known media fabrication of socialism. In the analysis, the emphasis on images allows us to consider popular science publications on architecture and the city as vehicles for a social imaginary of socialism in the GDR, which claims its place in the cultural history of reunified Germany.

This article is dedicated to anti-fascism in the GDR as a contradictory legacy. After 1990, the state-supporting and often formulaic anti-fascism appeared discredited as part of the GDR state doctrine: as ‘false’ anti-fascism. At the same time, especially in the 1990s, it was disputed in public debates whether there was a ‘right’ anti-fascism on the level of convictions. The debate about the greater adherence to right-wing ideology in East Germany is still linked to this today. Anti-fascism in the GDR should not be considered so simply as settled, because anti-fascist practices were ambiguous. Dealing with anti-fascism can raise new questions for research as well as for teaching GDR history to younger generations, questions which are worth dealing with.

The book Kinder- und Jugendtheater der Welt (Children’s and Youth Theatre of the World), which is the focus of my contribution, was published by Henschelverlag in East Berlin in 1978 under the direction of Christel Hoffmann and on behalf of the GDR National Centre of the ASSITEJ (International Association for Children’s and Youth Theatre). I begin by reconstructing the genesis of this book, which bears witness to the important role played by children’s and youth theatre in the GDR. Then I look back at the presence in Paris, in the holdings of the Société d’Histoire du Théâtre, of documents relating to the book Kinder- und Jugendtheater der Welt and sent by the GDR National Centre of the ASSITEJ : By examining these archives, I aim to shed light on the exchanges that existed between the East and West blocs, at the time of the Cold War, in terms of children’s and youth theatre.

This article takes a tour through the semantic field of “rest/remainder/vestige.” It examines the variations, connotations, and usages of these terms in both French and German and highlights the extent to which the word “rest” shapes debates on dealing with the past, which persists concretely in the present in the form of abandoned, concrete objects. The situation of objects, sites, or monuments from the former GDR in reunified Germany provides a paradigmatic example of this. The article is structured around the dichotomies that run through interpretations of the term “remainder”, between negative connotations (“waste”) and positive ones (“traces,” “archive”), between interpretations of the “rest” as the result of abandonment or, conversely, as a sign of resistance to disappearance. We first look at the use of the term “remainder” in various approaches to historiography (from Bloch to Benjamin). Next, we examine how the “remainder” reveals the mechanisms of transformation of cultural value through the phenomenon of “reconversion” (Assmann, Debary). Finally, we focus on the shift in meaning of the word “remainder” in the relative clause “what remains” and its established use as a title in key works on collective memory (Wolf, Wohlfahrt).

As part of the creation of an East German library in Nantes, the focus is on the ENT literary collection of the publisher Aufbau, one of the highlights of the collection. In the GDR, state intervention in the publishing sector was reflected, among other things, in the profiling of publishing houses: each publisher was required to have a ‘profile’ based on various criteria – selection of authors, thematic and ideological orientations – for the sake of economy, efficiency and productivity. This legislation shifts the focus from external competition between publisher profiles to internal competition between collections, which can thus partially circumvent a dirigist system. By subjecting the ENT collection’s exhaustive bibliography to synchronic and diachronic readings in search of anomalies (choices that contradict the profiling), it is possible to highlight signs of resistance to censorship.

This article focuses on the work of Hedda Zinner (1905-1994), an author of poetry, plays, and novels who enjoyed a certain popularity in the GDR and has since been forgotten. First, we’ll examine the current canon of so-called “GDR literature” and Zinner’s presence, or rather absence, in literary history. Second, we will look at the various themes addressed in the author’s work, for two reasons: first, this will reveal the difficulties the author had in dealing with this or that theme, and second, it will provide information about the experiences and knowledge that the works conveyed to the GDR reader. Finally, the contradictions of this work will be addressed through the question of writing.

By the example of Siegerland in South Westphalia the contribution tracks how the Reformation impulse of the priesthood of all believers caused a competition on religious interpretational regimes between religious High Culture in the shape of the Evangelical Church and the political authority on the one hand, and different varieties of religious Low Culture on the other hand since the 18th century. Besides the factual rivalry, those varieties are connected by emphasising the absolute liability of the Bible in its wording to distinguish it from the (historical-critical) theology and a church that is conducted by theologians. Since the late 20th century, there is also a trend to fundamentalistic-conservative positions in an aware distinction from the Mainstream Culture that is also presumed at the Evangelical Church. This leads to an alienation from the Evangelical Church even in case of such lay corporations, which understood themselves as a part of the church, originally.

The Kulturkampf era can be seen as a key moment in western European history in which the relationship between culture and religion is a central theme and subject to different interpretations depending on the political actors and the country. These different representations of religion and its role in culture function as premises in arguments regarding the role of the State in national education. Using parliamentary debates in the 1870s/80s in Prussia, France and the Netherlands as case studies, I analyze the discourse on the role of the State as “replacement” for the Church in the school and the role that often contradictory definitions of religion had in the legitimation of or opposition to legislation on this topic.

In metropolitan France alone, more than 1,100 Gospel groups and choirs have been listed. In the French-speaking transnational space, there are more than 10,000 structures, without counting the soloists and parish choirs who claim to belong to this musical genre. Today’s Gospel music attracts large crowds. What is at stake in the encounter between this cultural offer and plural audiences, inside and outside the churches? From a research field centered on the French-speaking world, through a socio-historical methodology (I), three intercultural dynamics unfold (II). First of all, the creation of an identity where African and European i nfluences come together, based on a reinterpretation of the heritage of slavery. Then, the making of “restorative” music, in analogy with the functions of “restorative justice” conceptualized by Howard Zehr. Finally, the making of a creolization, through inclusive music that tends to overcome community barriers. This formative cultural offer (Bildung) finally leads us to questions to be deepened, from processes of spiritualization, culturalization, globalization which invite comparison.

The concept of Kulturkatholizismus is less well known than its Protestant equivalent. Based on the case provided by the magazine Hochland, often cited as an example in this respect, we will study the distinctive features of this word and the most decisive factors in its emergence. Combining the history of the journal with that of the concept highlights the plural meaning of the latter and the remarkable continuity of the former, founded and directed by Carl Muth from 1903 to 1941. Finally, we will test the relevance of the term Kulturkatholizismus and the permanence of Hochland’s legacy after 1945 through two key examples: the place of the art image in the publication and the role played by the journal for one of its authors, E.-W.
Cultural Protestantism was an important movement of the Protestant church in Germany at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. It was rooted in Protestant liberalism and had a broad impact on the middle classes of that time. Cultural Protestants saw culture and the Christian (Protestant) religion as closely intertwined: in the cultural Protestant conception, Protestantism was to realize its potential as a “cultural power” and permeate and advance contemporary culture by shaping the life of society and the individual. This idea would hardly have been possible without a generally virulent exaggeration of the concept of culture in all areas of German society at that time. The German “cultural nation” replaced the missing state nation, culture replaced politics in the world view of the Germans. In the bourgeois women's rights movement, that was established in the second half of the 19th century, the goal of the struggle for emancipation was understood to be, for example, the development of women's “cultural influence”.When cultural Protestantism came to an end in the 1920s, it had already been massively criticized internally from other Protestant camps. Nevertheless, it was occasionally attempted, for example in 1932 by the Nobel Prize winner Thomas Mann, to position it against National Socialism. In the last decades, Cultural Protestantism has experienced a rediscovery in German theology.

The present article aims at presenting a panorama of the different aspects of cultural Judaism in Germany. The aim is to give an account of the different ways in which the relationship of German Jews to culture is viewed, since, from the Enlightenment onwards, they see themselves less and less from a religious or theological paradigm, but from a cultural point of view. Initially, the relationship of German Jews to culture, understood in the sense of Bildung, which is central to the nineteenth century, must be considered. Then, the renewed interest in the Jewish tradition of the “Jewish Renaissance” movement which took off in the 1910s and developed under the Weimar Republic will have to be analyzed. Finally, the central role of memory both in Jewish identity and in the relationship of German Jews to culture will be considered in order to bridge the gap between cultural Judaism before 1933 and that which developed after 1945.
