This study investigates the morphology, dynamics, and sediment characteristics of the Al-Ghord Lahmar megabarchans in SW Morocco. These megadunes developed under unidirectional trade-wind regime and are supplied by beach-derived sand. The megabarchans reach up to 30 m in height and about 1 km in length and are superimposed by barchanoid ridges. Megabarchans migrate at approx. 3 m/yr, while the superimposed dunes move 15–17 m/yr, indicating sediment recycling across the dune surface. Grain-size analyses reveal very well-sorted fine sands with limited spatial variability, whereas grainshape measurements indicate intensive sediment mixing and prolonged aeolian reworking. The results suggest that megabarchan growth depends on the interaction of persistent winds, continuous sediment supply, and ephemeral flooding, which enhances moisture retention and sediment trapping. Unlike relatively stable star and linear megadunes, megabarchans are highly mobile and sensitive to environmental change.

This article challenges the popular notion of accelerating Arctic warming. The author analyzed data on mean annual air temperature (MAAT), active layer thickness, sea ice extent, as well as the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) melt area and mass balance changes. The study demonstrates that the MAAT trends observed over the last 10 years are relatively flat, with a negative tendency even apparent at certain stations. The year 2012 constituted a clear turning point, as winter Arctic amplification began to decrease, which has subsequently been reflected in the other analyzed indicators. Potential mechanisms responsible for this phenomenon are discussed, including the possibility of a gradual return to the negative phase of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation cycle. The author argues that the widespread narrative of continuous Arctic warming acceleration, along with the climate models used by the IPCC, does not sufficiently account for crucial, long-term natural cycles and stabilizing feedbacks that currently appear to be manifesting in the Arctic.

This article investigates the loss of ecological and recreational values in Ukraine’s national nature parks (NNPs) due to Russian aggression. The study aims to conduct a spatial analysis of the NNP network representativeness and justify the loss of value of their landscapes within combat and occupied zones. Covering 56 NNPs, the research reveals that 21 parks sustained significant damage, with 10 under temporary occupation. The work (2014–2025) employs data from DeepStateMap, the “EcoZagroza” and “EcoSystema” platforms, and official reports from individual NNP websites. Although warfare and occupation do not alter the legal boundaries of the parks, they withdraw these territories from functioning. This leads to a reduction in the ecological and recreational value of the entire region. The conclusions emphasise the necessity of international documentation of these losses to develop strategies for the post-war restoration of Ukraine’s NNP network.

The paper presents the hydrological characteristics of the ungauged Psarka River catchment (a tributary of the Świślina River), where the construction of the proposed ‘Bodzentyn–Hucisko’ reservoir in the Holy Cross Mountains is planned. The analysis was based on data from the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management – National Research Institute (IMGW-PIB) for the Świślina River catchment (Rzepin gauging station, 1966–2024), which was adopted as the reference catchment. Average specific runoff, characteristic flows, environmental flows, and available flows were determined, and the reservoir filling time was estimated. Precipitation analysis was conducted using data from two meteorological stations (Bodzentyn and Suchedniów, 1961–2014), while climatic conditions were characterised using data from the Kielce-Suków synoptic station (1951–2025). The analysis indicates that the water resources of the Psarka River are sufficient to ensure the rapid filling of the proposed ‘Bodzentyn–Hucisko’ reservoir, with the filling time ranging from 59 to 146 days depending on the season, even under the most restrictive environmental flow criteria. However, the poor overall status of the Psarka River water body reported in 2024 is a cause for concern.

Former river channels serve as vital geoarchives for reconstructing palaeoenvironmental shifts. This study investigates the Vrakúň palaeomeander, a cut-off bend of the Barč branch (Danube Plain, Žitný ostrov, Slovakia). Based on a sediment core, we conducted grain-size, lithodynamic, and paleobotanical analyses. Textural indices (Visher curves, Passega diagrams, Folk-Ward parameters) differentiated channel and overbank facies. Basal high-energy deposits transition upward into fine-grained overbank layers and organic peat. Mineral interbeddings in gyttja sediments indicate four flood events. Radiocarbon (AMS) dating traces the evolution of the meander from its neck cutoff in the Iron Age (609–448 cal BC) to progressive infilling and a shift from lacustrine to paludic environment. Drainage systems accelerated groundwater decline, inducing peat earthification and soil salinization. These findings provide baseline palaeohydrological data and highlight the meander’s value as an ecological refuge.

The aim of the study was to understand the topographic and lithological conditions of soil water erosion, using the edge zone of the Narew River valley near Łomża as an example. One of the larger dry valleys dissecting the Narew River valley edge, with a catchment area of 1.25 km², was selected for study. The thickness of the colluvial (deluvial) cover was determined in three transects across the valley. The following topsoil properties were analyzed: texture, organic matter content and soil erodibility factor K. The study revealed catenary variability of the analyzed parameters, determined by the origin of landforms and denudation processes. The K-factor values indicate varying susceptibility of soils to locally significant water erosion, which is important for proper agricultural management of the catchment.

This study aims to identify the sedimentary texture of sandbars in the Vistula River channel on the Góra Kalwaria–Warsaw section. Surface samples were collected from 7 selected bars in their upstream, central, and downstream parts. Grain-size analysis was performed using sieve and hydrometer methods. Analysis of Visher’s grain-size cumulative curves and the relationship between the mean grain size and the first percentile on the C/M Passega’s diagram provided information on the lithodynamics of the depositional environment recorded in the deposits forming large channel bars. The upstream zones of the bars are composed of coarser grains transported by traction; the coarsest grains have a mean diameter ranging from 0.35 to over 32 mm, and in some of the bars, channel lag deposits resulting from erosion were visible. The deposits forming the fronts of the bars are primarily the result of deposition from saltation with a minor contribution of graded suspension (0.125–0.71 mm).

The aim of the study is to assess the spatial differentiation and determinants of the functioning of the long-term care system in the Małopolskie Voivodeship. The analysis of statistical data and the RPWDL registry from 2024, covering social welfare homes (DPS) and healthcare institutions (ZOL and ZPO), revealed a strong concentration of facilities in large cities (Kraków, Tarnów, Nowy Sącz) and in the southern counties of the region, alongside a deficit of infrastructure in north-eastern Małopolska. A partial correspondence between the spatial distribution of institutions and the demographic structure was observed, although it is not complete. An important differentiating factor of the system is also its social structure – areas with a higher prevalence of social problems show greater demand for institutional care. The results confirm significant territorial inequalities in access to institutional care and a partial functional inconsistency of the system, resulting from the parallel but not fully coordinated development of the medical (ZOL/ZPO) and social (DPS) sectors.

The article focuses on the quaternary sector, that is, the part of the economy based on knowledge, expertise, innovation, and information technologies, and its importance for regional development and the formation of the knowledge economy. The aim of the paper is to verify whether the selected key factors underpin the growing significance of the quaternary sector, using the Czech Republic as a case study. Drawing on data from 2009–2022, selected indicators influencing the share of the quaternary sector in the 14 regions (NUTS3) of the Czech Republic were analysed, reflecting the concept of learning regions. To achieve the objective, a regression analysis was conducted and two hypotheses were established. The results show that the most significant predictor of the development of the quaternary sector as a source of the knowledge economy is the number of employees in science and research, whereas the number of research institutions or the level of expenditure on science and research may not directly support its growth. The findings provide a basis for further studies that could better explain the complex processes shaping a knowledge-oriented economy within the framework of the learning regions theory.

The study focuses on the toponyms Jałta and Yalta as they are represented in Polish and French history textbooks. The aim of the research is to demonstrate that toponyms serve not only as repositories of historical memory but also as fundamental components in the construction of collective memory. Although recognized as equivalent, these toponyms evoke divergent recollections of the same historical event, functioning as conduits for moral, geopolitical, and identity-related evaluations articulated by various actors, including event participants, contributors to scholarly discourse, and textbook authors who shape interpretive perspectives. The variability in the meanings ascribed to these toponyms, considered from both diachronic and geographical perspectives, underscores the fluidity of the boundary between history and memory, revealing distinct discursive cultures manifested in Polish and French textbooks. The analysis is grounded in the principles of French linguistic discourse analysis and memory studies. The research corpus consists of Polish and French history textbooks for general education students, published between 1962 and 2022.

Research conducted in 2014–2023 identified meteorological and bioclimatic features at Lake Piaseczno (Łęczna–Włodawa Lake District) during the warm halfyear (April–September). The presence of the lake contributed to higher relative humidity (1–7% above the station in eastern Lublin) and more frequent night cooling below 15℃, reducing warm and tropical nights. Hot days occurred more often at the lake, while very hot days were more frequent in the city due to higher maximum temperatures. The diurnal cycle indicated stronger nocturnal cooling near the lake and greater daytime heating in the city. Analysis of the Humidex index showed that comfort conditions occurred more frequently at night and in the morning at the lake, while during the day higher humidity contributed to stronger discomfort. The findings confirm the complex local climatic effect of the lake: mitigating at night and in the morning, yet enhancing thermal discomfort during the day.
